Siberian Ginseng – Identification of medicinal uses, interactions, side effects,
Siberian Ginseng
Eleutherococcus senticosus (syn. Acanthopanax senticosus) is in the same botanical family as ginseng (Araliaceae), but is not a member of the genus Panax it is not considered a true ginseng. E. senticosus, also known as Eleuthero, is commonly known as Siberian or Russian ginseng because it is from the east Russia. The root or root bark is used medicinally.
Uses and Benefits:
Siberian Ginseng is said to have powerful adaptogenic and tonic properties that can modulate stress and improve physical and mental health in a variety of stress conditions. It was discovered by scientists Soviets were looking for an alternative to Asian ginseng and other adaptogenic herbs. Officially approved for use in Russia in 1962, Siberian Ginseng has become in a popular beverage business to help improve endurance. In traditional Chinese medicine, this plant is considered a minor tonic (called Wu Jia below). Pharmacology:
Eleuthero (AG) is considered the most important components in the roots of Siberian ginseng. Unlike gender ginsenosides Panax, however, the eleutherosides are a diverse group of chemicals from chemical plants (Iignans, sterols, phenylpropanoids, coumarins, etc.), not are unique to E. senticosus. Caution is therefore recommended for patients with disease of heart disease, hypertension, psychiatric disorders or the use of caffeine or other stimulants, even if these side effects are not well established.
Side effects and interactions:
In two separate cases, adulterated or misbranded Eleutherococcus preparations (probably Periploca sepium, which contains glycosides heart) were associated with androgenization in a newborn with absent increased digoxin toxicity. Siberian ginseng safety is unknown in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Preparations and dosages:
Several products are in the U.S. market preparations of the dried herb to a variety extracts. In studies of Russian origin, the doses were generally taken for a maximum of 4-8 weeks at a time, interrupted by 2-3 weeks of ginseng-free intervals, but not no data to support these programs. Common dose extracts encapsulated in the market today include one to three capsules of 100 to 400 mg 2-3 times a day, more or less equivalent to 1-4 g / day or a product over a dried root.
Assessment Summary:
Siberian Ginseng is commonly used as an adaptogen to help modulate the response to stressors and improve mental and physical endurance and stamina. These statements are based largely on studies in animals and early clinical investigations by Soviet scientists. Siberian Ginseng improves physical strength is not based on clinical trials more recent. Limited studies suggest that Siberian ginseng can increase leukocyte activity, patients with lower cholesterol and glucose, improves memory, and has herpes infections at a face, but these studies require confirmation and, in general, the effectiveness of Siberian ginseng has not been established beyond reasonable doubt for any indication. Based on limited data, Siberian Ginseng appears safe with no side effects documented.
