Why do basketball players wear / arm sleeves at the elbow?

Do they serve a purpose or is it just a fad? Really I do not know and I do not know.

The first person to use the task was Allen Iverson. His tattoos are unacceptable by the NBA when he was filming a sleeve to cover them. Some players wear the shirt to protect your arms, as Ray Allen. Ray kept scratching in the series of 08 'and started using a sleeve as well. Most I think the players actually helps them move, because it makes them feel more comfortable arms.
